Negative Energy - Better Me

I read the daily post sent out by Rick Warren called Daily Hope and one I read today kidn of stuck with me and I wanted to specifically address one part of it - LINK to original post.

The post is generally about how to "love" or deal with difficult people (post below)

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” (Romans 12:18 NIV)

One of the most important skills we can develop as we walk with Christ is to love difficult people. Here are four methods Jesus modeled when he encountered difficult people:
  • Realize you can't please everybody. Even God can't do that! Refuse to play games (Matthew 22:18).
  • Learn to say no to unrealistic expectations. Confront them by “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15 NIV).
  • NEVER retaliate (Matthew 5:38-39). It only lowers you to their level.
  • Pray for them (Matthew 5:44). It will help both of you. Let God speak to them.

What I wanted to specifically address is point #3 here - NEVER retaliate ... It only lowers you to their level. This is very similar to something I've learned in counseling but said in a different way: if you put out negative energy you will get negative energy back.

Now the energy statement, unfortunately doesn't flip perfectly so putting out positive energy doesn't necessarily mean you get positive back from a negative person BUT if they are negative you are a whole lot more likely to get a neutral out of the situation if you are positive. BUT if someone is negative with you and you respond to negative, with relationships it goes negative downhill in a hurry. In this idea "NEVER retaliate" makes a whole lot of sense as you are either matching their negative energy OR you are the one bringing the negative energy.
